COMMUNITIES OF FAITH

  • Working with faith communities is a pleasure and challenge. How do you represent religious ideas and principles in a graphic format? How do you convey commitment and passion in a way that can be easily understood and respected by others?

CHALLENGING PARADIGMS

One of my recent assignments was to create images to accompany a sermon about the overt (as well as the unrecognized biases) against people of different body sizes and physical abilities. Visual media relentlessly reinforces the notion of what a person should - and should not - look like. My job was to challenge this stereotype without resorting to stereotypes myself.

Who doesn’t love an auction?

One of my most favorite design opportunities is charity auctions for churches. The following images are from a recent auction held over Zoom. This is a small community of faith with deep hearts. They raised almost $40,000.

The fun part of doing this kind of work is that it is all about eyeball-grabbing. These images were used on Facebook and Instagram and streamed for the Zoom audience. The images had to be lively enough to stand out from the avalanche of social media imagery AND be able to hold the auction bidders attention during the hour-long online bidding. And since I did not have to worry about “branding” restrictions (this is a church, after all), it was all about having fun with design and sharing the joy.
